Suicide risk insurance covers

Today is World Suicide Prevention Day

Today, September 10th, is World Suicide Prevention Day. According to the Federal Statistical Office, around 8,000 people in Germany committed suicide in 2013, and there are even a million worldwide who see no other way out than suicide. This makes suicide one of the biggest health problems in the world. The day of action launched by the World Health Organization and the International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP) aims to show that suicide prevention is possible and that there is a way out - even from the most serious crises.

But why is dealing with this topic? Well, the question arises again and again: “Does the term life insurance pay for suicide?” This leads us to the fear that people take out survivor protection so that their relatives receive the sum insured after the suicide.

Does the term life insurance with Suzid pay?

In fact, there is a passage in the general insurance conditions that deals with the suicide of a policyholder. So it says in paragraph 5:

§ 5 What applies in the event of suicide by the insured person?

(1) In the case of willful suicide, we will pay if three years have passed since the conclusion of the contract.

(2) In the event of willful suicide before the three-year period has expired, there is no insurance cover. If it is proven to us that the insured person (that is, the person for whose life the insurance is taken out) killed himself in a state of pathological disturbance of mental activity that precludes free will determination, insurance cover exists.

(3) If our obligation to perform is extended by a change in the contract or the contract is restored, the three-year period begins anew with regard to the changed or restored part.

Specifically, this means that there is a Waiting period of three years so that the insurance pays in the event of a suicide. There is an exception if the suicide occurred as a result of mental derangement. If additional insurance is taken out (subsequent increase in the sum insured), the three-year period begins again.

Often times, suicide is the result of an acute life crisis. Anyone who is currently stuck in one should not concern themselves with whether a death protection for the relatives financially, but look for ways out of this crisis - and there is always a solution!

There are ways out

If you are thinking of killing yourself, get help! Talk to others about your problems! If you do not want to turn to friends or relatives, you also have the opportunity to fall back on other means!

  1. You can reach the telephone counseling at 0800 - 111 0 111 and 0800 - 111 0 222. The call is free and does not appear in the itemized connection list. You can reach Muslim telephone counseling around the clock on 030 - 44 35 09 821.
  2. You can also chat with someone about your thoughts on the Pastoral Line's website.
  3. You can get advice by email.
  4. Talk to a doctor, psychologist, or clergyman about your problems. All these professional groups are subject to confidentiality or pastoral care secrecy.
  5. Go to a counseling center, you can find an overview here.

Consider it: No money in the world can replace the loss of a loved one. Even if term life insurance pays in the event of suicide (at least in Germany) after the waiting period has expired, you should rather use the three years to regain the courage to live. Save your loved ones the suffering that suicide causes.
