Before deciding on your first e-cigarette, there are a few things that every vaping novice should know:
- There is an ideal e-cigarette for pretty much everyone.
It is possible that this is not the first e-cigarette that you try or that you think might be the right one. Not all conventional smokers smoke the same brand of cigarettes and this analogy carries over to e-cigarettes, because not all e-cigarettes are suitable for all vapers. If you've tried vaping before but it didn't work, please try again with an e-cigarette starter kit. - At first you will likely cough.
But don't worry, this is normal as the feeling of steaming is different from smoking. For this reason, most regular smokers will cough once they have taken their first puffs on an e-cigarette. Conventional smokers inhale the vapor and do not vape like a steamer (more on this later). The vapor also feels “thicker” than smoke when inhaled and this change in sensation can cause coughing, but this is only temporary and will be over within a few days of the start of the vapor.
- You can get dry mouth.
Not only can you get a dry mouth, but you can also get a dry nose and throat. But don't worry, that's normal too. Your e-liquid consists of 4 components, 3 if your e-liquid is nicotine-free. Some of these ingredients are hygroscopic, which means that the substances draw water, since you inhale the substances, you may be drawn in water. But the more familiar you get with vaping, the less you will notice it. Just drink an extra glass of water occasionally when you start vaping.
- False starts can occur.
You are trying to change a habit that you may have had for several years. Some people will pick up an e-cigarette and never have the craving for a traditional cigarette again, while others will take a long time to get rid of the cigarette. If you reach for a cigarette in the morning or during the day, do not punish yourself for it, the strength of your e-liquid may need to be adjusted a little.
- Vape like a steamer, not a smoker.
The first mistake people usually make is trying to vape like a smoker. If you pull harder on a cigarette, you get more smoke, but it doesn't work with vaping. Since nothing is lit with an e-cigarette, it takes a little time to produce the vapor. You have to learn to vape like a steamer.
- You might be frustrated.
Smokers get their nicotine flash almost instantly. Conventional cigarettes have been optimized over many years to ensure this. Nicotine contact lasts a little longer with an e-cigarette, but the feeling also lasts longer. If you're vaping and still feeling the familiar cravings, just wait a few minutes. It's hard not to be frustrated, but you will be surprised how quickly you get used to this difference.
- You can vape too much.
In contrast to a conventional cigarette, you can keep your e-cigarette with you all the time and start vaping at any time. You can vape too much, just as you can smoke too much with a cigarette, especially if you have a higher nicotine strength. In this case, there may be minor side effects, just as if you smoke too much, but they also go away quickly. Examples of the side effects are headache, nausea, or dizziness. Stop vaping and wait for your body to calm down. If the symptoms occur frequently or on a daily basis, your nicotine strength is probably too high.
How do you choose your first e-cigarette?
Let's face it, vaping and smoking are not the same thing.
It's easy to light a cigarette, but it takes a little longer to vape. E-cigarettes require minor maintenance, such as charging the battery, changing parts or refilling e-liquid. The difficulty is in not falling back into old habits like "It's easier to go to a store and buy a pack of cigarettes."
To counteract this, satisfaction has to be balanced with user friendliness. You should opt for an e-cigarette that is easy to care for, an e-liquid, what flavor you enjoy vaping and you should make sure that you really enjoy vaping too.
As already mentioned, there is no perfect e-cigarette that is suitable for everyone. Every vaper is looking for something different in their vaping experience. Some people are happy when they exhale a cloud of steam, others value the taste, and others want the vaping to feel like traditional smoking.

What types of e-cigarettes are there?
One thing that you will quickly notice is that there are a multitude of products to choose from, for a short time you could feel like you are on a minefield. How much you want or need to understand about e-cigarettes depends on your e-cigarette choice, and if your answer to this section is that it seems too complicated for you, you will likely need a pre-filled e-cigarette.
Each type of e-cigarette has its own advantages and disadvantages. Please remember that there is no such thing as an e-cigarette that fits everyone. Usually, e-cigarettes can be divided into two categories, pod e-cigarettes and refillable e-cigarettes.
Pod e-cigarettes, as the name suggests, are e-cigarettes that contain a pod or cartridge and not a tank. They are usually "stick-shaped" and consist of only two parts: a rechargeable battery and a pod or cartridge that snaps into the battery. They are aimed at new vapers or smokers who want to make the switch. The Pod e-cigarettes are designed to be easy to use and particularly easy to maintain. Some vaping pods have buttons, most are automatic which means you can just pull them out to vape like a cigarette. Most of them are compact, discreet, and designed to mimic the sensation of smoking.
Prefilled pods come with e-liquid, making them the easiest devices to use. All consumables that need to be replaced are contained in the pod. When the Pod is used up, simply throw it away and put in a new one.
Refillable pods come empty so you can fill the cartridges with an e-liquid of your choice. You can refill the cartridge approx. 10 times before it has to be replaced. They know the cartridge is empty when the steam stops producing as much. Simply fill up a new pod and snap it into your e-cigarette. This means that while it's not as easy to use as using pre-filled pods, the cost of ownership is a lot lower.
The traditional, refillable type of e-cigarette is probably what you think of as an e-cigarette. It consists of a battery mod, a tank that is filled with e-liquid and an atomizer head. They come in a variety of shapes and sizes, from a smaller cylindrical style to a large box shape. Most of these e-cigarettes have a push button to vape and many have settings that can be adjusted. They are filled with e-liquid, which you have selected according to strength and taste. These e-cigarettes aren't just for those new to vaping, although some have been specifically designed and are usually referred to as starter kits.

How do you know which e-liquid to choose?
There are two decisions you need to make, which nicotine strength and which taste you want.
You can base your nicotine strength on the number of conventional cigarettes you smoke per day. You will find our recommended strengths below
|1 - 5 a day||0.6% (6mg / ml)|
|5 - 15 a day||1.0% (10mg / ml)|
|15 - 20 a day||1.4% (14mg / ml)|
|20+ a day||1.8% (18mg / ml)|
In general, the fewer cigarettes you smoke, the lower the nicotine strength you will need. The above guide is a really good starting point to look out for when choosing your first e-liquid.
The guidelines are definitely not set in stone: you could smoke 5 cigarettes a day but need 1.8% e-liquid to satisfy your cravings, you could smoke 20 cigarettes a day and only need 0.6%. You have to try it out to see what suits you best.
If you vape and still smoke, you may need to increase the strength of the nicotine you are using. If you feel like you have too much nicotine, reduce the strength slightly or vape less. The important thing is that the tar and carbon monoxide in cigarettes are deadly, not the nicotine. There is little health benefit or benefit in trying to use the lowest nicotine strength you can get through the day.
Choosing your e-liquid can be as varied as you want it to be, and it is the most enjoyable part of vaping as there is so much to choose from. It is difficult to recommend an e-liquid taste because tastes are different, one loves it, the other hates it.
Most new vapers start with a tobacco or menthol flavor, these can make it easier to switch from cigarettes to vaping as the tastes are already known. Once you get used to vaping, you can experiment with the hundreds of different flavors.
We advise you to start slowly. Give your body time to get used to the e-liquid you have chosen. Don't buy 30 bottles of one strength and one flavor until you feel completely confident that you can vape with it all day and that you have found the best strength for you.
Avoid smoke triggers
Ask yourself this question: why do you want to be a vaper and not a smoker?
Is it health aspects, finances, you don't want to be left out in the rain or you don't want to smell like an ashtray? Write down all of the reasons you want to switch to vaping, and if you're ever looking for a cigarette, grab your e-cigarette and look back at your list.
Identifying your smoke trigger can be helpful. Is it when you wake up and have your first coffee? After the meal? When do you drive? Once you've figured out when you are most likely to want to smoke, you can stop the cravings before it even starts.
Make sure that you don't run out of e-liquid, that the battery is charged and that you have your e-cigarette with you. If you feel like it, just reach for your e-cigarette instead of lighting a cigarette.
As a former smoker you are constantly fighting against your "habits" and some of them stay with them forever. It's that warm, fuzzy feeling when you think back on the first cigarette of the day, but it's a false reminder because we know smoking is bad for us. We are addicted to the habits.
It is always best to adopt the mantra “No one puff”. As long as you have your e-cigarette with you, you can satisfy any craving with vaping.
How can you avoid these triggers?
E-cigarettes cover a large proportion of these triggers. You will help people avoid cravings as you deal with so many habits, behaviors, and sensations of a smoker:
|Hand-to-mouth action||The movement when vaping is the same as when smoking. You lift something up to your lip and back again. This hand-to-mouth action is a habit that is difficult to break down. Former smokers may have trouble keeping their hands busy.|
|The feeling of inhaling||Smokers breathe in the smoke of a cigarette, vapers breathe in the vapor of an e-cigarette. We cannot overlook this action, as it does not go away. You breathe in something that feels like smoke.|
|The release of exhalation||Exhaling that cloud of smoke and the feeling of release that comes with it is something that smokers struggle with. Vaping can cause a cloud of vapor on the exhale.|
|Nicotine delivery||Vaping is a cleaner alternative to getting the nicotine your body demands. As mentioned earlier, nicotine release is slightly slower than a traditional cigarette, but the feeling of fullness lasts longer.|
|Throat hit||This is difficult to describe for a non-smoker, but as a smoker you will likely understand. Vaping gives you a throat sensory response similar to what you are used to from a cigarette. That warmth, the tingling sensation, the tightness that you feel in your throat and chest when you breathe in.|
Let's clear up a few myths about vaping
Before we say goodbye, we felt it was important to clear up some of the recurring vaper myths. These are longstanding claims that the media unwraps when you have a "little news" day.
E-cigarettes are just as harmful as traditional smoking.
There are many studies that refute these negative claims. In the first long-term health study carried out over a period of three and a half years on a group of vapers who had never smoked before, Professor Riccardo Polosa from the University of Catania and his research group found in 2017 that the respiratory health of the group was identical to the ones that neither smoked nor vaped.
Need some more evidence that vaping is less harmful than smoking? Public Health England and the Royal College of Physicians state that e-cigarettes are at least 95% less harmful than tobacco cigarettes and were even recommended as a legitimate alternative by the UK government during the “Stoptober” campaign.
Passive steam is harmful
While we all know that traditional second-hand smoking is harmful, it is often mistakenly carried over to vaping. Surprisingly, the Lorillard Tobacco Company published a study to show that passive vaping is not harmful. The 2014 study compared the carcinogen content in passive vaping with passive smoking. They came to the conclusion that passive vapor contains the same amount of carcinogens as the ambient air that everyone breathes.
Vaping e-cigarettes is not an effective solution to quitting smoking
This mythical claim appeared and has always been suspect as many have been successful with the method. In early 2019, a research team led by Professor Peter Hajek of Queen Mary University of London published the results of a randomized study in the New England Journal of Medicine. The results not only showed that e-cigarettes were helpful in quitting attempts, but that e-cigarettes were almost twice as effective as the “gold standard” combination of nicotine substitutes they were compared to.
From e-liquid you get the "popcorn lung disease"
This is a really popular myth, and sensational media coverage seems to have entrenched it in the minds of many people. This claim is far from the truth, as Martin Dockrell, Tobacco Control Lead at Public Health England explains:
“One of the most common safety concerns raised is that e-cigarettes can cause popcorn lung. British newspapers have nothing to fear in this regard. The concern arose because some of the flavors used in e-liquids contain a chemical called diacetyl and this has been linked to the "popcorn lung." However, diacetyl is banned from e-cigarettes and e-liquid in the UK.

Vaping is more addicting than smoking
There is some evidence that e-cigarettes are far less addicting than regular cigarettes. In 2015, a study by ean-François Etter suggested that e-cigarettes are similar or less addictive to nicotine gum, but both are far less addictive than traditional cigarettes.

Don't let the pressure to quit smoking make you fail: if you can do it fast - fantastic. If you continue to smoke but reduce it - go ahead! You are really well on your way to quitting smoking.
Do not lower your nicotine levels until you are sure you are ready to do so. When 1.8% e-liquid satisfies your cravings, stay at this strength as long as necessary.
