Sujata Anandan describes, among other things, the beginnings of Siv Sena (Marathi: शिवसेना, founded 1966-06-19 by Bal Thackeray, Marathi: बाळ केशव ठाकरे, 1926 - 2012) and, above all, how different the groups (e.g. Congress politicians) were who had allied to liberate Bombay from the communists and let local Maharashtrians rule Bombay.

"WHEN THE SHIV SENA supported the candidature of Pratibha Patil of the Congress for presidency in 2007, Bal Thackeray could pass it off as a move in keeping with the Sena's raison d'être, the Marathi manoos. The Shiv Sena was, after all, a nativist party and it had always fought for the rights of local Maharashtrians who many, including those in the Congress, thought were being treated as outsiders in their own homeland. The BJP, with whom the Sena has had an alliance now for nearly three decades , could do little to persuade Thackeray otherwise. But they could do even less when, inexplicably, Thackeray decided to once again support the candidature of a Congressman, Pranab Mukherjee, at the subsequent presidential election in 2012, even without any overt appeal from the Congress to his party to do so. "

"So Thackeray's 'Bombay for Maharashtrians' agenda found great resonance across the board, even among traditional Congress politicians. It is not surprising then that there was, and still continues to be, an almost seamless integration between Congress ideologues and the Marathi agenda of the Shiv Sena. "

खेमका, राधेश्याम [Khemka, Radhyesham]: वोट किसको देना [Choose who?]. - In: कल्याण [Kalyan, Gita Press]. - 2014-04

"In April 2014 as the process of the sixteenth Lok Sabha elections got under way, Kalyan editor Radheshyam Khemka wrote a piece titled ‘Vote Kisko Your ' (Whom to Vote For). Khemka began with the statement, laced with excerpts from religious texts, that an unjust ruler can squander away the empire inherited from his forefathers in the same way as wind blows away clouds. So, Khemka said, every alert citizen should vote for a leader who was immersed in the service of religion and had the potential to cleanse the system of corruption. He asked readers to extract the following promises from their chosen leaders: to pass a Central law banning cow slaughter; to make cheap food, clothing, education and medical care easily available, and to put an end to the rising demonic spirit as well as growing insecurity in society. He also wanted Kalyan readers to seek assurance from leaders that they would not indulge in financial corruption for personal benefit or to help their party. "

Dharwad (Kannda: ಧಾರವಾಡ): murder of Malleshappa Madivalappa Kalburgi (Kannada: ಮಲ್ಲೇಶಪ್ಪ ಮಡಿವಾಳಪ್ಪ ಕಲಬುರ್ಗಿ, 1938 - 2015)

The scientist Malleshappa Madivalappa Kalburgi (Kannada: ಮಲ್ಲೇಶಪ್ಪ ಮಡಿವಾಳಪ್ಪ ಕಲಬುರ್ಗಿ, 1938-2015) is murdered in his home in the Dharwad district (Kannada: ಧಾರವಾಡ ಜಿಲ್ಲೆ) in Karnataka (Kannada: ಕರ್ನಾಟಕ).

From an interview with Narendra Nayak (Kannada: ನರೇಂದ್ರ ನಾಯಕ್, 1951 -) to the question: why rationalists like Gauri Lankesh (Kannada: ಗೌರಿ ಲಕೇಶ್, 1962 - 2017), Narendra Dabholkar (Marathi: नरेंद्र अच्युत दाभोलकर, 1945 - 2013) and MM Kalburgi (Kannada: ಎಂ. ಎಂ. ಕಲಬುರ್ಗಿ, 1938 - 2015) are murdered:

"it is a combination of circumstances that is causing all forces with vested interests to group together to eliminate us. If I take the case of Kalburgi, he was eliminated because of his depth of research on Lingayats and Veerashaivas. Through his research, he took." a stand that the two groups are different. He opined that Veerashaivas are Hindus and they believe in the caste system, while Lingayats do not. Right now, it is a big controversy in the academic space. There were groups within these communities that wanted to finish him. You also have the mother of all these people, the Sanatan Sanstha, who, I believe, helps with the logistics for anyone who wants to commit such crimes. [According to its website the Sanstha was established to “present Spirituality in a scientific language to those curious about Spirituality. " The day after Dabholkar’s murder, it published a statement by its founder Jayanath Athale, who wrote that "such a death for Dabholkar is a blessing of the Almighty."

Gauri Lankesh (Kannada: ಗೌರಿ ಲಕೇಶ್, 1962 - 2017) writes:

"in fact, veerashaivas and lingayats are two totally different ideologies. kalburgi (and people such as myself) believed in that and used to argue that lingayats are not hindus. perhaps that is what led to his killing, who knows?" On Oct 29, 2015, at 1:39 AM, Gauri Lankesh "

"Jayant Balaji Athavale [Marathi: जयंत बाळाजी आठवले, 1942 -], the founder of Sanatan Sanstha [Marathi: सनातन संस्था], which is under the scanner over the murder of rationalist and CPI [Communist party of India] leader Govind Pansare [Marathi : गोविंद पानसरे, 1933 - 2015] this February in Kolhapur [Marathi: कोल्हापुर], enjoys an exalted status among his followers. So much so, they believe he has undergone “divine changes” over the years.

These “changes” are listed in websites and blogs officially linked to Athavale and the Sanstha: “hair turning golden”; “Divine particles” that “fall off from his body”; an Om symbol on his "fingernails, forehead and tongue"; "Various fragrances" emanating from his body.

One website has posted images of various objects, including that of a pink toilet brush, with captions claiming that they were used by Athavale and changed color.

[...]

A blog run by the organization - englishsanatanprabhat. blogspot - refers to Athavale as the “personification of God”.

“… Guru (Dr.) Athavale, who is striving day and night to achieve the lofty ideal of establishing the‘ Hindu Nation ’, is the personification of God. In reading of the Nadipatti [नाडी पट्टी] predictions, the Maharshis have recently declared that He is the Incarnation of Shri Vishnu. Even from the Divine changes in His body and the Divine auspicious signs appearing on His body, it is proved that He is not an ordinary human being, but God Himself, ”

states an article posted on the blog.

[...]

Sanatan Sanstha first made the headlines in 2007 after three of its members were arrested by the Maharashtra Anti Terrorism Squad (ATS) for allegedly planting crude bombs at cultural venues in the satellite cities of Mumbai to reportedly protest against the screening of a play.

It then came under the spotlight after the 2009 blast in Madgaon [(Konkani: मडगांव] that left one dead, when over 150 of its members were questioned. Last week, police said that the man who has been arrested in connection with the murder of Pansare, Sameer Gaikwad [Marathi: समीर गायकवाड], was a member of the Sanstha. "

"When Mohammad Akhlaq was beaten to death on 28 September 2015 in Dadri, Uttar Pradesh, by a Hindu mob riled by rumors that he and his family had slaughtered a cow and were eating beef, the Bajrang Dal stood not by the victim but by the murderers. Without delay, it offered legal assistance for the perpetrators of the crime. Bajrang Dal spokesman Balraj Dungar [Hindi: बलराज डूंगर] also warned that Uttar Pradesh could see 'another 1857' if a complete ban on beef was not imposed.

‘Why did the revolt of 1857 take place? People rose because the British Raj did not respect religious and cultural sensibilities. If the UP government lets cow slaughter go on, the people will rise again. '"

At the University of Hyderabad. Hindi: हैदराबाद विश्वविद्यालय) in Hyderabad (Telugu: హైదరాబాద్; Urdu: حیدر آباد), the 26-year-old doctoral student Rohit Vemula (1989-2016) hanged himself because he and four others were thrown out of the dormitory .All were Dalits and belonged to the Ambedkar Student Association, which was involved in a dispute with the ABVP (Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad, Hindi: अखिल भारतीय विद्यार्थी परिषद), whose members were mostly students from higher castes. The rector issued a warning to both groups. But through the ABVP relationship, the government stepped in and appointed a new rector who came from the same caste as the AVBP president. The suicide leads to student protests at numerous universities. Dalit organizations accuse the politicians of being punished so harshly because of the caste affiliations of the students that Rohith Vemula was thrown out of the dormitory as the end of his academic career.

The students Kanhaiya Kumar (Hindi: कन्हैया कुमार, 1987-), Umar Khalid and Anirban Bhattacharya of the JNU (Jawaharlal Nehru University, Hindi: जवाहरलाल नेहरू विश्वविद्यालय) are allowed to re-register for the next semester. The three leaders of the JNU student organization in Delhi called for an event on 2016-02-09 in memory of Afzal Guru (Mohammad Afzal Guru, 1969-2013 Urdu: افضل گورو), who was executed for the attack on parliament (2001) Kanhiya Kumar is said to have made 'anti-Indian' remarks. Because the students were sentenced to prison for this, there were violent protests against the government of Narendra Modi in the university for several months. There were public lectures, rallies and human chains of demonstrating students and professors, including a long protest march of sympathizers through Delhi's administrative district. These protests were protested by ABVP (Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad, Hindi: अखिल Studenten परिषद) - the RSS student organization - which had also reported the three students for anti-national slogans related to the riot law. The court fined another 18 students and sentenced them to expulsion from the university. The three leaders were released on parole in March 2016.

[Fair use]

"The term Hindutva - explained by Savarkar as 'Hindu ness' and not 'Hinduism' - is almost always used to refer to the core idea at the heart of the members of the Sangh Parivar. But on the ground, it is easy to get misled if one does not reverse the meaning of this term. It is Hinduism that is invoked to ensure the mobilization of masses and the polarization of voters. Hindutva as an ideological construct simply vanishes the moment one leaves the national headquarters of the BJP and the RSS.

The irony is that the young men from backward or lower castes who constitute a significant portion of the foot soldiers of these shadow armies are rarely able to recognize that the Hindutva to which they have dedicated their energies is nothing but brahminism. And that it is the same brahminical Hinduism that has kept them oppressed for centuries and against which they have their own legacies of resistance. They are so blinded by their growing Hindu religiosity and hatred for the ‘threatening other’ that they simply cannot see how the Hindutva they are working for ultimately seeks to revive the historical hegemony of brahmins and other upper castes.

Occasionally, the truth becomes visible. For instance, when caste hierarchies affect the distribution of power even at the local level. Sometimes this leads to the revolt of backward caste leaders and cadres (as in the case of the Sri Ram Sene), but the rebels hardly ever look for an ideological alternative. "
