Whiskey means something like “water of life” in Gaelic. In the past, people firmly believed in the life-prolonging effect of the spirit. People who were sick or in pain were often given alcohol. And how does it look today? Can the consumption of whiskey be really good for your health? We did some research and found 13 good reasons that speak for the moderate consumption of whiskey - at least if the studies cited are to be believed.

Whiskey is low in calories

Lose weight with single malts? Do whiskeys make you slim? Well, it's not quite like that. Which is true: whiskey contains fewer calories than beer, wine or cocktails. A 4cl dram contains only 91 calories. For comparison: half a liter of wheat beer contains around 260 calories. So if you hold on to your nosing glass for a while, you are ahead in terms of calories. Other advantages: whiskey contains no fat, no carbohydrates and only little sugar. A 1991 study by the American Society for Clinical Nutrition also suggests that moderate consumption of whiskey gives the body energy and reduces sugar cravings. You only have to be careful before the effect of alcohol: Because it makes you hungry and where hunger meets greasy food in the form of chips or a burger, the saved whiskey calories are quickly fed back.

Whiskey is gluten free

Whiskey is said to reduce the risk of heart problems

Independent studies in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition and in the European Heart Journal came to the same surprising result: the moderate consumption of alcohol - a maximum of seven small glasses of whiskey per week - should reduce the risk of heart disease to a certain extent. In the first study mentioned, the following test was also carried out: A group of nine men drank wine, barrel-aged single malt whiskey and unstored alcohol in three test runs on different days. Their antioxidant levels were then measured. The single malt provided the greatest concentration of antioxidants.

Whiskey is said to protect against cancer

Studies have shown that moderate consumption of alcohol can help the body regulate insulin levels. This could potentially reduce your risk of developing type 2 diabetes. However, with heavy consumption the risk can increase significantly. And those who already have diabetes should no longer drink alcohol at all.

Whiskey helps with colds

Stress weighs on the soul and alcohol - consumed in moderation - can help us relax. The nerves come down and the sedative effect of the whiskey helps us fall asleep later. It only becomes problematic if you cannot rest without the “whiskey before going to bed” - because the constant consumption of alcohol is of course not healthy.

Whiskey helps us digest a heavy meal

If you take a closer look, then the alcohol doesn't really help digestion at all. The effect of digestive schnapps has long been disproved, but remains in the collective memory of many for a long time. What is true, however: The whiskey after a meal numbs the stomach and so we no longer feel that we have eaten too much or too heavily. We perceive the pleasant feeling as an aid to digestion.

Whiskey causes (almost) no hangovers

Yes, the green smoothie with chia seeds from the hip organic boutique on the corner is super healthy. But do you really feel like doing it? The great thing about whiskey is that it tastes so good. And that's why you don't really need a reason to enjoy it.

The above reasons are a nice side effect. And of course it also makes a damn good feeling to read, whereas whiskey protects us everything. It can hardly be checked whether all of this is correct. Because what one study proves today, another can refute tomorrow.

And one should never lose sight of the most important factor: whiskey is a high-percentage alcohol, the excessive consumption of which has many health disadvantages. These can be so large that they presumably outweigh the advantages mentioned. For this reason alone, moderate consumption is advisable.

When you enjoy whiskey, it's best to rely on your gut feeling at the end: Enjoying a little dram of a good single malt or blend from time to time is perfectly fine.
