Have you ever seen a plane crash?

Number of airplane accidents by country and region until 2021

Published by Statista Research Department, May 20, 2021
With a total of 861, the United States is the country with the most aircraft accidents in civil aviation since 1945 (as of May 20, 2021). In the same period, 61 aircraft crashed in Germany. The Statista dossier Safety in Aviation contains, among other things, statistics on the number of accidents and victims in aircraft accidents and safety measures in global aviation.

Flight safety in the USA

Several of the world's most fatal airplane accidents occurred in the United States. In 1979, an American Airlines plane crashed shortly after taking off from Chicago, killing 271 people on board. The cause of the crash was an engine that probably came off the wing due to a maintenance failure. In the USA, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), founded in 1958, is responsible for flight safety. Among other things, it gives safety recommendations and instructions to prevent aircraft accidents in the USA.

How safe is it to fly?

In the last few decades, flying has become safer, primarily due to technical improvements and modernizations in air surveillance. The accident rate in global commercial aviation is very low compared to other modes of transport.
